El Molino High School has been selected as a 2009 Distinguished School! The California Distinguished Schools Award identifies and honors those schools that have demonstrated educational excellence for all students and progress in narrowing the achievement gap based on a variety of eligibility criteria including designated federal and state accountability measures based on No Child Left Behind (NCLB), Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP), and the Academic Performance Index (API) requirements based on California High School Exit Exam and STAR test scores.
In his announcement of the selected schools, Jack O’Connell, California Superintendent of Public Instruction said:
“California Distinguished Schools must meet the challenge of providing all their students with a rigorous education and to fully prepare today’s students for success in postsecondary education or the workforce…In addition, these extraordinary middle and high schools have shown they are able to increase the achievement of all their students and have provided evidence that they are closing the achievement gaps that, unfortunately, exist at many schools. The Distinguished Schools program always identified schools that are leaders in academic achievement. It now also recognizes schools that are leaders in helping all students succeed, and highlights the best practices that are effective in closing the gap.”

This year we need your help to expand the use of the Internet for many of the items we normally mail home. We believe that this will increase our effectiveness in communicating with you and save hundreds of dollars in the costs of printing and postage. We would like to move much of our correspondence with you to email. This would include announcements, newsletters, event previews, athletic and extracurricular activity announcements, and emergency information. We would continue to mail home grade reports and correspondence related to student behavior. If you do not have email service at home, we can help you set up a free account that can be used through a library or other location.
In addition, the El Molino High School website will provide access to expanded information about curriculum, activities, and school policies as well as student forms. You will be able to go to the website and simply point, click, and download the forms you need.
If you would like to participate, you may either click on the link below or complete and return the form that will be sent home as a part of the Opening of School packet (www.elmolino.org/documents/email.ehs.doc).
You may return forms electronically to email.ehs@wscuhsd.k12.ca.us.

REGARDING MEDICALLY FRAGILE INDIVIDUALS AND H1N1

On Friday, August 28th, the Sonoma County Public Health Department released the information that an adolescent male in Sonoma County had succumbed from complications of the H1N1 flu. On the same afternoon, the Delgado family released the information that their son, Victor Delgado, an El Molino High School freshman, had died from complications of the H1N1 flu. The El Molino High School community is saddened by the death of Victor Delgado and offers condolences to his family.
We will, as we have in the past, provide counseling to El Molino students who have been affected by a loss of a fellow student and friend. El Molino administrators, counselors, and teachers will with the work Sonoma County Office of Education and community resources to assess the needs of our students and to provide support.
The Sonoma County Public Health Department did not indicate an H1N1 incident in our school district, nor have they advised students, parents or staff members to avoid coming to school. There has been no indication from the Sonoma County Public Health Department that there is an increased risk to El Molino High school students or faculty and staff members. It is vital that students, faculty and staff members, and the school community follow the H1N1 precautions. These precautions are posted on our website and will be distributed to all students on Monday, August 31st. It is important for all of us to communicate that it is essential to follow all appropriate precautions and actions to protect ourselves from the H1N1 flu.
We will stay in constant contact with the Sonoma County Office of Education and Sonoma County Public Health officials and follow the established procedures to assure the safety of our students. If there is a public health concern that will affect a specific population or school, the Deputy Sonoma County Public Health Officer is the person who will release that information.
The physical and emotional health and safety of our students and staff members is our top priority. Please let me know of any concerns or suggestions you have to help in this effort.
H1N1 2009 flu spreads the same way as seasonal flu, mainly through coughing or sneezing by infected people. The symptoms of H1N1 flu are similar to those of regular seasonal flu.
