ART STUDIO I (P)
Grades 9-10 1 Year
This is a basic introductory art class for the beginning student. Emphasis is placed in the areas of drawing and painting. The drawings will be made in landscape perspective, still life shading, and various concepts using the human figure. These concepts also include portraiture, cartooning and fashion illustration. Paintings will be made from still life and real life objects. Pencil, India ink, watercolor and acrylics will be the basic media use for these paintings. (Shop card required.)

ADVANCED ART (P)
Grades 10-12 1 Year
Art Studio II is designed to meet the University of California entrance requirements, the State of California framework, and as an advanced course in art production and process. Students will further develop their basic skills while working toward an in depth understanding of a area of art they are interested in. Student will be required to present a professional style portfolio of work each semester, as well as a group research project and presentation. Students will develop their aesthetic perception through critique and art appreciation, as well as develop an awareness of inter-connecting cultural expressions and influences. Shop card fee is required.
PREREQUISITES: The completion of Art and Design with a “B” or better, or portfolio work that demonstrates and experience and understanding of art, to be assessed by the instructor. Permission of the instructor. (Shop card required.)

ADVANCED ART (AP)
Grades 11-12 1 Year
Taught in conjunction with Advanced Art. Only open to students that are highly motivated. Portfolio class with a total of 28 finished pieces required by May deadline in 3 different categories. Students will be required to have time to work outside of class time. Sketch books or journals required. Critiques will be on going to enable the student to learn how to analysis their own work.

ART AND DESIGN (P)
Grades 10-12 1 Year
This course is designed as a one- semester course for the serious student who is interested in enhancing artistic skills and applying knowledge to practice. The emphasis will be on teaching the elements and principles of art and design and composition theory. There will be a short unit focuses on the visual and practical arts throughout history. This course will explore the theory and techniques of drawing, painting, mix-media, collage, and include an introduction to computer art. Students will be expected to keep an explorative art journal that will consist of drawing, writing and a morgue (a collection of pictures, drawing and ideas that is used for reference and inspiration). The student will be expected to complete all assignments with a high standard of quality geared towards professionalism. (Shop card required.)

SCULPTURE (P)
Grades 9-12 1 Year
Sculpture is a beginning to advanced level course. Students will be introduced to artistic perception, historical and cultural contexts of sculptural artwork from around the world and throughout time. Students will learn about aesthetic valuing through the principles of art and design. Students will also develop their own creative expression by creating their own sculptural works of art in various mediums, techniques, and styles. This course will meet all California State framework, UC, and National standards for the Visual Arts.

PHOTOGRAPHY
Grades 10-12 1 Year
Photography is an introductory course in darkroom techniques and camera operations. Students will work on individual projects and assignments according to their interests and abilities. Black and white film processing and printmaking skills will be carefully covered, with opportunities for advanced work. Students will help support yearbook and newspaper with photo services upon request.

INTRODUCTION TO COMMUNICATIONS, COMPUTERS, AND MEDIA (P) *
Grades 9-10 1 Year
In this class, students will learn the major programs and skills necessary to pursue careers in electronic communications in high school, college and business. These skills include videography, digital photography, audio engineering, keyboarding, word processing, databases, spreadsheets, graphics, telecommunications, web design and programming. The programs include ClarisWorks, Dream Weaver, Microsoft Office, especially PowerPoint, Imorie, Adobe PhotoShop, and Adobe PageMaker.
PREREQUISITE: Consent of the instructor.

MEDIA PRODUCTION LAB *
Grades 10-12 1 Year Broadcasting
This course is centered around the production of multi-media presentations, including animations, and videos. The core of the course will be the planning, production, editing and presentation of various media productions. This will be done primarily through the use of advanced computer techniques.
PREREQUISITE: Completion of Introduction to Communication, Media and Computers with a grade of C or better or consent of the instructor.

WEB DESIGN: ELECTRONIC PUBLISHING ON THE WORLD WIDE WEB *
Grades 10-12 1 Year
Students will learn how to design and publish pages for the World Wide Web that include text, graphics, animation, video, and audio. They will learn the fundamentals of HTML code, as well as the available WYSIWYG (what-you-see-is-what-you-get) programs that make web page development easy for both Macintosh and PC platforms. They will lean how to organize an overall web site effectively. Each student will become responsible for a particular department, course, club or project at the school and for collecting, organizing and producing the web page for that area. Students will also report on the latest news stories affecting the school and the community so that the information can be posted on our web site. They will also be given the opportunity to develop their own pages designed with their individual interests and expertise in mind. The object of the course is for students to learn how to provide reliable information and creative projects for the rest of the world to see and to use.
PREREQUISITE: Completion of Introduction to Communication, Media and Computers with a grade of C or better or consent of the instructor.
*Fulfills either a Fine Arts or a Practical Arts requirement.

JOURNALISM/NEWSPAPER PRODUCTION (P)
Grades 9-12 1 Year
This year long course is for students who wish to write, edit, design and photograph for the school newspaper, The Lion’s Roar.
PREREQUISITE: Reading and writing at grade level is required.

YEARBOOK
Grades 10-12 1 Year
The emphasis in this class is on production. Students will be involved in the planning and production of The Millstream. Students will become knowledgeable about various layout styles, writing copy, headlines, and captions. Students must qualify through a selection process.

BEGINNING ACTING (P)
Grades 9-12 1 Year
This course is designed for people with little or no theater experience. Course work will include an over-view of theater history and cultural perspective, production theory and process, and beginning stage acting. This course will involve a large amount of class participation, but the emphasis is on trust and support in the classroom so students are able to learn to feel comfortable in front of an audience.

INTERMEDIATE ACTING AND THEATER PRODUCTION (P)
Grades 10-12 1 Year
Intermediate acting and theater production is for students who wish to continue their exploration in the theater arts. This course is designed to broaden their acting ability and to begin work on theater design theory (which includes lighting, sets, costumes, make-up, and sound) and technical theater production. Course work will include cultural and historical implications of stage performance and film, types and styles of acting, and ensemble work.
PREREQUISITE: Beginning Acting and consent of the instructor.

ADVANCED ACTING AND THEATER PRODUCTION (P)
Grades 10-12 1 Year
This course is an advanced production course which is designed for students who are interested in the performing arts as a career serious hobby. Students will learn advanced performance techniques including improve, mime, stage and film movement, the various acting styles, voice, dance and choreography, audition techniques, and characterization. Students will continue their study and understanding of technical theater and may choose this as their discipline area. Students will also study in depth the various movements in artistic performance and expressions as influenced by world culture and society throughout history. Senior students will be required to design and participate in community workshops and/or directing class scenes. Both the fall and winter plays will be cast from this class.
PREREQUISITE: Beginning Acting and consent of instructor.

STAGE CRAFT TECHNOLOGY
Grades 10-12 1 Year
This course is designed to prepare students for theater, stage and movie production technology. Students who have completed a technology course and want to pursue a career path in stagecraft technology should take this course. It is coordinated with the drama program and supports the career path for theater and drama production. This course lends the aspects of technology with acting, math, science and set construction. This course will emphasize safety, lighting, sound and construction for the performing arts.
PREREQUISITE: Students must submit an application and have completed an Engineering Technology course or Algebra I (completed or enrolled concurrently is recommended. Exceptions will be considered on an individual basis.)

BEGINNING DANCE AND CHOREOGRAPHY
Grades 9-12 1 Year
Beginning dance offers interested students in grades 9-12 multiple dance experiences in the areas of artistic perception, creative expression, historical and cultural context, and aesthetic valuing. This comprehensive program explores various forms of dance while maintaining a focus on the specific techniques of jazz, ballet and modern dance. Performance in the spring dance show is an essential part of the curriculum. 10-12 grades may receive P.E. credit if desired.

INTERMEDIATE DANCE AND CHOREGRAPHY
Grades 10-12 1 Year
Intermediate Dance and choreography offers interested students in grades 10-12 (9th grade with audition and instructor approval) multiple dance experiences at an intermediate level. Intermediate dance students will move beyond the beginning levels of dance education and focus more intensively on furthering their dance training and developing personal strengths and abilities, dance technique and choreographic knowledge, experience and expertise. Two performances yearly, one in the fall and one in the spring, are an essential part of the curriculum.
PREREQUISITE: Completion of Beginning Dance and Choreography and instructor approval.

ADVANCED DANCE AND CHOREOGRAPHY 1 Year
Grades 10-12
Advanced Dance and Choreography offers serious students in grades 10-12, at an advanced level, multiple dance, choreography and performance production experiences. Students will apply advanced choreographic principles, processes and skills, as well as advanced technical skills in various dance genre, to create and communicate meaning through the performance of dance. This is a balanced program that focuses on dance performance and production and enhances student learning by teaching self-discipline and decision making; promoting individual creativity and problem solving, providing opportunities for success and building self-esteem. Two performances yearly, one in the fall and one in the spring, are an essential part of the curriculum.

PREREQUISITE: Completion of Intermediate Dance and Choreography and instructor’s approval. An audition may also be required at instructor’s discretion.


BAND (P)
Grades 9-12 1 Year
The band is the major instrumental performing group at El Molino. Through the execution and preparation of music for football shows, band festivals and concerts, students enrolled in the band increase their knowledge of music literature and theory, and improve their technical ability on an instrument.
PREREQUISITE: One year experience on a band instrument.

JAZZ BAND (P)
Grades 10-12 1 Year
Through the preparation and execution of current jazz literature, students enrolled in the Jazz Ensemble study jazz theory, improvisation and jazz styles. Jazz ensemble performs extensively at school and in the community. Hard work and commitment are a prerequisite for success in jazz band.
PREREQUISITE: Approval of the instructor audition and concurrent membership in band.

CHORUS (P)
Grades 9-12 1 Year
Chorus is an introductory level music course open to all students. Through the study of traditional and popular styles of choral music, students will learn fundamentals of musicianship, vocal and performance techniques. Performance at concerts is required.

CONCERT CHOIR (P)
Grades 9-12 1 Year
Through the execution and preparation of music for concerts, festivals and community performances, members of the choir will study music notation, literature and style, sight singing, vocal technique and stage deportment.
PREREQUSITE: Open by audition (spring) and consent of instructor.

ACADEMIC CHOIR (Encore) (P)
Grades 9-12 1 Year
Academic choir offers the opportunity for highly motivated students to explore musical materials intended for small ensembles. Musical selections are chosen from medieval through the contemporary eras. Styles chosen include jazz, pop, folk, as well as classical forms such as motets and madrigals. Students will increase their knowledge of basic vocal technique. They will gain skill in ensemble singing as well as elements of staging and choreography. Intense commitment and hard work are essential to success in Academic Choir.
PREREQUSITE: Open by audition (spring) and consent of instructor.

ACADEMIC BAND (P)
Grades 11 & 12 1 Year
This course will provide an opportunity for the performing music student to study and to express themselves knowledgeably on music listening, the creative process in music, musical forms and structure. Each student, in addition to the normal content of their performing class (band or chorus), will speak and write about music and enter into the planning and leadership of group activities.
PREREQUISITE: Consent of instructor.

INSTRUMENTAL LAB
Grades 9-12
This is an individualized class for students who wish to learn and improve their music skills, regardless of their ability level. Students are required to practice on individual and small group projects. Presentations are required every week. Students are required to develop basic musicianship skills including reading and writing music. Students may play acoustic guitars or any band or orchestra instrument.
PREREQUISITE: Student must submit an application for apporval.
