Physical Education

Graduation Requirements: 20 credits in Physical Education (or waiver)

FRESHMAN PHYSICAL EDUCATION
Grade 9 1 Year
This is a full year course designed for freshmen students. It is a co-educational course. The different activities include: team sports (football, soccer, volleyball, basketball, softball. indoor soccer, volley tennis, broom ball and whiffleball); individual activities: (strength conditioning and badminton); and physical fitness (including a period of time each day set aside for body conditioning). Students will work out in our new fitness center 2 to 3 times a week. The fitness center has both cardio vascular and individual machines. The California State Physical Fitness Test battery will be administered three times during the year. Once in September as a pre-test and then at the end of each semester.
Expectations: The student will dress for Physical Education class everyday and participate in the required activities. Students will be given skill and written tests when applicable. Grades are based on daily participation and skill/written/physical fitness tests.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION II
Grades 10-12 1 Year
Physical Education II is a full year course designed for sophomore, junior or senior students. It is a co-education course. The curriculum includes many of the activities that the freshmen course does, but also includes more recreational activities which have carry-over value. The activities include team sports (football, soccer, basketball, volleyball, softball, indoor soccer, broom ball and whiffleball); individual sports (badminton, pickleball, golf, and recreational games) and physical fitness (including a period of each day set aside for body conditioning). Students will work out in our new fitness center 2 to 3 times a week. The fitness center has both cadio vascular and individual machines. The California State Physical Fitness Test battery will be administered three times during the school year. Once in September as a pre-test and then at the end of each semester.

Waiver - Participation in interscholastic athletics may substitute for up to one year of required physical education. Ninth grade physical education is required. A waiver may be granted only for Physical Ed II. Students will not receive credit for physical education by participation in athletics, but will receive a waiver from the requirement. A student may not receive more than one semester’s waiver for any single sport.
A ninth grade student who participates, as a ninth grade student, in an interscholastic athletic team, may not use this participation as the basis of a waiver for the sophomore, junior or senior year.

BEGINNING DANCE AND CHOREOGRAPHY
Grades 9-12 1 Year
Beginning dance and choreography offers interested students in grades 9-12 multiple dance experiences in the areas of artistic perception, creative expression, historical and cultural context, and aesthetic valuing. This comprehensive program explores all forms of dance while maintaining a focus on the specific techniques of jazz, modern, and ballet dance. Performance in the spring dance show is an essential part of the curriculum.
10-12 grades may receive PE credit if desired.

INTERMEDIATE DANCE AND CHOREOGRAPHY
Grades 10-12 1 Year
Intermediate Dance and Choreography will offer qualified students in grades 10-12 (9th grade with audition and instructor approval) multiple dance experiences at an intermediate level. Intermediate dance students will move beyond the beginning levels of dance education and focus more intensively on furthering their dance training and developing personal strengths and abilities, dance technique and choreographic knowledge, experience and expertise. Two performances yearly, one in the fall and one in the spring, are an essential part of the curriculum.
PREREQUISITE: Completion of Beginning Dance and Choreography and instructor approval.

ADVANCED DANCE AND CHOREOGRAPHY
Grades 10-12 1 Year
Advanced Dance and Choreography offers serious dance students in grades 10-12, at an advanced level,
multiple dance, choreography and performance production experiences. Students will apply advanced
choreographic principles, processes and skills, as well as advanced technical skills in various dance genre, to
create and communicate meaning through the performance of dance. This is a balanced program that focuses on
dance performance and production and enhances student learning by teaching self-discipline and decision
making; promoting individual creativity and problem solving, providing opportunities for success and
building self-esteem. Two performances yearly, one in the fall and one in the spring, are an essential part of the
curriculum.
PREREQUISITE: Completion of Intermediate Dance and Choreography and instructor approval. An audition
may also be required at instructor’s discretion.
