Algebra 1A
Course Syllabus
2007-2008
Ms. Grassl

Course Description: This course is the first year in a 2 year Algebra course which was developed because of the requirement to pass Algebra in order to graduate.  The course will cover topics in Algebra such as simplifying Algebraic expressions, solving linear equations and writing linear equations.

Materials:  The following materials are necessary for success in this class and you are required to have them by the end of the first week:
o    1” ring binder
o    Pencil with eraser
o    Covered textbook
o    Lined paper

Homework:  Homework will be assigned everyday, including some weekends.  It will be collected at the beginning of the next class meeting. Late work will not be accepted.  The original problem must be copied and all work must be shown.  Answers must be boxed or circled.  All work should be done in pencil so that mistakes can be erased.  Every assignment must have the following heading in the upper left corner of the page:
o    Name
o    Teacher
o    Class and Period
o    Date
o    Assignment

Binder: You are required to have a 1” binder dedicated to this class.  This binder will be used on a daily basis and must be brought to class everyday.  This is part of your grade and I will be checking them throughout the semester.

Grading:  The semester grade is based on the total points earned during the semester.  It is NOT the average of the two quarter grades.  The 1st and 3rd quarter grades are just progress reports towards the semester grades.
o    Tests = 50% of grade
o    Homework = 40% of grade
o    Binder = 10% of grade

Absences: Regular attendance is critical for success in this course.  It is your responsibility to get assignments that you have missed and to arrange a make-up test time with me.  Be sure to get the notes you may have missed as well.
o    Call a classmate.
o    Check the class binder.
o    If you have an excused absence, you have the same amount of days to turn in your work as the number of days you were absent.
o    If the absence is unexcused, no make-up work or tests are allowed.
o    Be prepared to make up any missed tests or quizzes the following day in class.
